Mennonite Recipe Cards Truth is stranger than fiction, folks. I’m here to tell you that on the subject of shame-based foods, I’ve heard from readers all across America. Some have generously shared their own ethnic traditions—"In my family we serve beet soup cold, with horseradish!" Some have disputed my Mennonite labels—"I’ll have you know that the Mennonites stole those cabbage rolls from the Poles!" Some readers even wanted to know how they could get hold of some of the damp persimmon cookies I describe in chapter six. I’ll never be accused of recipe hoarding. Nor will my mother, who cheerfully launched into prescriptive cooking mode when I called her the other day. The only recipe she had to look up was the one for persimmon cookies. She hadn’t made them since we were kids. "You and Hannah never liked the raisins," Mom said. "But you should be over that by now." Last night, with apprehension, I made the damp persimmon cookies. You know what? They’re pretty good.
